The Graphic Success of Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades of GreySometime in 2011, British writer E.L. James came up with a novel entitled Fifty Shades of Grey with hardly any idea that this would eventually come out as a best seller. The novel was initially published as an e-book and even then proved to be an instant top seller in the e-book fiction category.

When the novel was eventually made available in paperback version, it immediately gained worldwide success. To date, Fifty Shades of Grey has reportedly sold more than a hundred million copies all across the globe, with a movie version already in the works with a release date set early next year.

What has made this particular book achieve monumental success and popularity has a lot to do with the theme. It has been classified as an erotic adult novel, and ostensibly features numerous sex scenes, many of which are said to be quite graphic.

The story revolves around 21-year-old Anastasia Steele, an extremely naïve college student who is set to graduate from college with a degree in English literature. As a favour to a close friend, Katherine Kavanagh, Anastasia agrees to interview a mysterious but handsome and fabulously wealthy bachelor named Christian Grey for their university paper. This is where the conflict of the story begins to unfold.

To make the story short, Christian agrees to the requested interview, and in their very first meeting, there was an instant attraction between Anastasia and her interviewee. After a few more encounters, Christian decides to tell Anastasia about his feelings for her and how he wants their budding relationship to reach the next logical level.

The offer was initially frightening for the naïve Anastasia especially since Christian desires for a slightly different kind of relationship, one that involves domination and submission. Despite the risks involved, Anastasia agrees to his wishes and thus begins her journey to the world of sexual exploration.

The novel has been criticized for its writing style, taking note of various lapses. Still, there is hardly any doubt that Fifty Shades of Grey has made a significant impact on the sexual consciousness of an entire generation. 50 shades of grey pdf
